Course Description:
Students interested in exploring a possible career in the criminal justice, corporate-private security, armed forces, or other human services field would find benefit from attending this program.
The program will also explore career opportunities in local, state, and federal agencies and focuses on public speaking, reading and writing skills and application of content via scenarios and skills testing.
- Learn about the foundations of the criminal justice system, courts, corrections, and law enforcement.
- Develop skills in public speaking, reading, writing and observation as you record/share cases and mock crime scenarios.
- Seniors who successfully complete the PSSS year are eligible to apply to local law enforcement agencies for a possible cadet position.
- Juniors who successfully complete the PSSS year are eligible to apply to the Capstone Internship program their senior year.

Course Outline:
1st Semester: Leadership Styles and Skills, Team Building, Professionalism, Accident Investigations and Reconstruction, Public Speaking, Overview of the Criminal Justice System, History and Roles of Law Enforcement, Note taking, Interviewing, and Report writing: incident de-escalation and decision making
2nd Semester: Law and Legal Studies, Understanding and Application of the Bill of Rights, Court Structure and Functions of the State and Federal Court System, Juvenile Justice, History, Role and Function of Corrections, Officer Safety, Traffic Stops and High Risk Traffic Stops, Crime Scene Investigations, Creating and understanding a personal budget.
High School Credit:
Students will earn elective credit at their high school upon completion of this course. Please see a high school counselor (based on district decision) for eligibility towards 4th-year math-related credit, VPAA credit, and waived credits for third year science and second year world language.
College Credit: Students can obtain up to 6 Direct College Credits to Muskegon Community College as well as Articulated College Credits to several other Schools.
