Course Description:

In the Advanced Healthcare program, students build on the health foundations skills learned in the first year, primarily in an ambulatory setting (medical office, clinic, urgent care). 

  • Medical Assistants support physicians, nurse practitioners and physician assistants.
  • Students study advanced skills such as: EKG, aseptic/sterile technique, medicine administration, use of diagnostic equipment and phlebotomy. 
  • Qualified students will be placed in a clinical experience with industry partners to put their communication, teamwork and clinical skills into practice. 
  • Eligible students have the opportunity to test for one or more of the following: Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) certification, Patient Care Technician (PCT/A), or Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA)

Students who would benefit from this program

Students who would benefit from this program are those who enjoy helping others, are not bothered by medical situations (including blood, fluids & needles), and are detail oriented. The skills learned in this class will prepare students for all healthcare careers.

 

Course Outline:

1st Semester: Medical Asepsis, Physical Exams (Adult & Peds), Eye and Ear Assessments, Cardiopulmonary procedures, Sterilization and Disinfections, Minor Office Surgery, Radiology, and Vital Signs.

2nd Semester: Medical Record, Physical Agents to Promote Healing, Medication and Intravenous Administration, Clinical Laboratory, Urinalysis, Phlebotomy, Hematology, Medical Microbiology, Blood Chemistry, Immunology, and Clinical Experience.

High School Credit:

High School Credit: Students will earn elective credit at their high school upon completion of this course. Please see a high school counselor (based on district decision) for eligibility towards 4th-year math-related credit, VPAA credit, and waived credits for third year science and second year world language.

College Credit: Several Michigan post-secondary education partners offer direct and articulate credit for this course. For specifics, visit the College & Career Services tab on our website.
