Health Careers Phlebotomy


Course Description:
This course offers training in phlebotomy, as well as basic healthcare principles. Phlebotomy is the process of drawing blood from a patient.
- Phlebotomists collect blood from patients and prepare samples for testing.
- Students will learn safety, communications, infection control, legal/ethical principles, healthcare systems, teamwork, medical terminology, CPR and first aid, employability skills, and phlebotomy principles.
- Students will complete multiple blood draws on training arms, as well as live patients and each other.
- Eligible students can obtain their phlebotomy certification by passing the national exam and fulfilling 30 blood draws.
- This course is an acceptable prerequisite for Advanced Healthcare.
Students who would benefit from this program
Students who would benefit from this program are those who enjoy helping others, can think on their feet, are good at problem solving, and are not bothered by medical situations that include blood and needles. This is a great intro course to determine if a healthcare career is for you.
Course Outline:
1st Semester: Phlebotomy chapters 1-3, 6, 7, 8 and 10; MT chapters 1-3, 5-6, 8-10; Capillary punctures; vital signs; Mannequin and live arm draws; ICEV.
2nd Semester: Phlebotomy chapters 4, 5, 9, 11-14; MT chapter 7, 11-15, live arm draws; CPR/first aid; bloodborne pathogens; Phlebotomy certification.
High School Credit:
Students will earn elective credit at their high school upon completion of this course. Please see a high school counselor (based on district decision) for eligibility towards 4th-year math-related credit, VPAA credit, and waived credits for third year science and second year world language.
